In the years of war and terror that have convulsed Arcaikos for over two hundred years, children from rebel Veleta families were often abducted and taken to Cazam Goral where, if they were found to possess superior powers, they were brought up to forget their past and to destroy their former families.
One such child, renamed Alain Gadael, rebels against the ruler Mordaunt D'Alneto, who condemns him to a slow horrific death.
Somewhere in the wilderness, another lost child senses his distress and sets out to rescue him and the vital information he has stolen.
Elsewhere, amid mounting threats to their existence, the people of Ebora Verde debate whether to move en mass to Condoria Biarma.
Arianwen, meanwhile, despairing of the coming of the Osanë (The Saviours) predicted long ago by Rhiannon Caelan, contemplates taking on the role herself, knowing that as an unwilling partaker, she faces certain death if she succeeds.
